"Garbage Disposal Acting Up?"

Ever had to deal with a garbage disposal that just stopped working? Before you call a Tacoma plumber, try these tips to diagnose and fix the problem.

If the disposal is clogged, use an object that can easily reach into the drain (NOT your hand) to remove any debris from the disposal.

Use a broom handle to move the disposal blade first counter-clockwise, then clockwise, until the cutter blade spins freely. If it has no trouble spinning, then the motor is not locked up — a common problem in failed disposals. If there are no leaks, you do not need a plumber.

If no electric power is reaching the disposal's motor, try activating the reset button and checking the fuse panel for a blown fuse.

Check the electric switch for current with a circuit tester, available at home stores in the electrical department. If there is no signal, then a defective switch is the culprit. If there is a signal, you probably have a loose wiring connection inside the disposal.
